Subject: ARRL - National Exam Day 1993
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
The ARRL is sponsoring a National Examination Day for Amateur Radio
License testing. That day is this Saturday, October 30, 1993.
The following is a listing of nearly 80 examination teams who will be
participating in this activity.
We wish all examinees the best of luck. We especially offer our thanks
and appreciation to all VE Teams who are participating both in this day--
and the remaining 364 days of each year. Know that your efforts
are appreciated!
AMATEUR RADIO EXAMINATION OPPORTUNITIES
*****************************************************************
Special Note: Amateur Radio licenses usually arrive between 8 and
10 weeks after the test session. The FCC considers their
processing time to be 90 days--from the date they receive the
application. The FCC usually receives the application one
to two weeks after the test session (once the VE Team and the
coordinating VEC have completed their processing).
Note: Codeless Technician to Technician w/HF upgraders (who pass a
Morse code test) will not receive a new license from the FCC.
The existing Technician license plus the CSCE conveying the Morse
code test credit is the only documentation issued for use of
the additional HF privileges.
*****************************************************************
The following test session information is provided by the
ARRL/VEC for the upcoming six to eight week period. For
further information, please contact the test session CONTACT
PERSON at the telephone number provided. If necessary, you
may contact the ARRL/VEC at 203-666-1541 x282 for additional
information. Electronic mail may be forwarded to the ARRL/VEC
via USENET at "bjahnke@arrl.org" or via MCI Mail to
MCI ID: 215-5052.
Although the test session information presented here does
not indicate whether walk-ins are accepted or not, most test
sessions do allow walk-ins. We encourage you, however, to
always contact the CONTACT PERSON at the telephone number
provided so that the VE Team is aware that you be attending
the test session.
STILL NEED TO PREPARE FOR YOUR EXAM?
If you would like information on how to become licensed; or
how to locate Amateur Radio clubs, instructors, licensing
classes and/or Novice examiners in your area; please contact
the ARRL Educational Activities Department (EAD) at 203-666-
1541 x219. The EAD can also provide information on
recommended study materials. Electronic mail may be forwarded
to the ARRL EAD via USENET at "rwhite@arrl.org" or via MCI Mail to
MCI ID: 215-5052.

And GMRS is hardly 'New'. It's been around for years (at least 10, probably
more).

: least, that is what I know from the little I have found on the subject.
Security depends on the algorithm you use to "spread" the signal, so
you can make it pretty public if you want to. (I think current FCC
rules limit ham useage to a few well-known algorithms.)
As far as my limited understanding goes, the main advantage is
coordination: a set of well-coordinated and efficiently-used
conventional channels are more efficient of spectrum space than spread
spectrum, but you can throw a bunch of spread-spectrum users into a
band with *no* coordination and do almost as well. It really pays off
when users start moving around or coming and going with no warning.
That makes it ideal for consumer applications, the advantages for hams
are less clear.
The ARRL publishes a book on the subject that is supposed to be a
pretty good intro.

The solder pads on my FT-530 were certainly tiny. Not a job for someone
with shaky hands.
There are still lots of pads who purpose I don't know. I'm not willing to
desolder them just to see what happens.

No. You have some misperceptions:
- You seem to think that gay people don't have children. Not so. They do,
the most famous example being Oscar Wilde.
- You seem to think that the gene could be passed directly, but not
indirectly. The gene or combination of genes could be passed through
the brothers and sisters of gay people.
- You seem to think that there is no evolutionary value in homosexuality.
Turn your arguement on its head and say "If homosexuality is genetic, and
it's still around, it must have an evolutionary advantage."
- You seem to think that traits which are disadvantageous (not granting
that homosexuality is such a trait) would be bred out. That's not
not necessarily the case. It takes a fair amount of lethality for a
trait to be bred out. In any case, only those traits which show up
before or during normal child-bearing years will be bred out.
Comments about how this is irrelevant to amateur radio will be cheerfully
ignored. This is USENET, after all. Digression is a way of life.

And they will. I used to live in Flagstaff (until getting laid off last
January).
I had a running battle with the Arizona DOT for years about auto
registration.
Turns out that state makes a MAJOR hassle about things along these lines.
For example,
they won't sell you a parking permit for the University UNLESS you have
an Arizona
Registration with ARIZONA insurance (I'd moved there from Colorado - had
Colorado
based insurance from a company which did business in both states - the
company said
"sure it's good in Arizona" - but I had to cancel it and buy friggin
ARIZONA insurace at
ARIZONA controlled rates!) All this time I owned property, paid taxes,
voted, and maintained
a year round residence back in Colorado -
However, at any rate - one reason I was fighting this was because I had
Colorado call
sign plates. And in Arizona when you register your car, not only do you
have to put
ARIZONA plates on your car, they CONFISCATE your old plates (called
"surrendering" them).
Now, I had another vehicle still registered in Colorado which I would
have ideally
switched my Colo call sign plates over to, but that was a no - go since I
couldn't
register the first car in ARIZONA without losing them...
I also checked about call sign plates in RRIZONA (they cost $2/yr in
Colorado) - turns
out they are classed as vanity plates and have the same exhorbitant
charge - and this
is in Barry Goldwater land!
I'd like to tell the Sovereign State of Arizona where they can put those
confiscated plates...

If those 49 MHz units are the ones sold here on 55.050 MHz; they are
indeed FM, and they do indeed come down nicely to 6m. However, their
output power is best measured in femto-watts; they draw more current
on receive than transmit...
They also have an excellent front-end for their size (nearby transmitters
don't seem to bother them) and have an independant Rx/Tx circuit, so a
repeater split is no problem.
